Happy Birthday Mohammed Shami (3rd September)

Mohammed Shami (born 3 September 1990) is an Indian right-arm-fast bowler, who not only swing but also seam the ball pretty well. He is also known as a “reverse swing specialist”.

7 Interesting facts you must know about Mohammed Shami :

1.) Shami is originally from Sahaspur, a village which is 22 kilometres away from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh. He switched to Bengal in 2007 due to lack of opportunities in UP and to play club cricket, on the advice of his coach Badruddin Siddique.

2.) In his early days, Shami used to travel from his village to Moradabad to train with his coach. He used to reach training one hour earlier and set up his own practice nets in his backyard.

3.) For practice, Shami used to carry home a dozen of old, torn balls and then bowl with those on the matting turfs of Moradabad.

4.) Shami made his ODI debut against Pakistan in January 2013 where he bowled a record four maiden overs.

5.) In the year 2013, when Shami played his debut Test match, many cricketing legends said that this is the rise of a reverse swing bowler in the Indian team. His display of reverse swing against the West Indies in Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell match was incisive, accurate and lethal.

6.) In an interview to a daily newspaper, Shami mentioned that he did not know about an ‘extra surname’. He said, “I don’t know how my name got that tail. I’m Mohammed Shami, not Shami Ahmed.”

7.) Shami belongs to the family of pacers. His father Tousif Ali was also a fast bowler in his younger days. One among the four brothers, Shami became a successful pacer who plays for Team India. But very few people know this fact that all the four brothers of the family wanted to pursue their career as a fast bowler. They have also played cricket at local level. No doubts that amongst all, the quickest was Shami.
