Indian right-handed batsman KL Rahul may be ruled out of the second Test scheduled to begin on September 30 in Kolkata and veteran Gautam Gambhir is the probable replacement for the opener.
Rahul didn’t field in the second innings due to his hamstring and Shikhar Dhawan was used as a his substitute.
Indian management is currently working hard on Rahul’s fitness, while the Indian coach Anil Kumble, as per the reports from India Today, has asked to call back the in-form Gautam Gambhir as a backup opener for the second Test to be played at the Eden Gardens.
Gambhir is likely to undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Association (NCA) in Bengaluru today and if things go well there, he might make a comeback to Test cricket after 2 years.
Gambhir played his last Test for India at the Oval in 2014 where he only managed three runs in his two innings and since then he has been out of the Indian squad.
But, considering his recent form, he was rewarded with the captaincy of India Blue in Duleep Trophy tournament.
He opened the innings for his team and scored 90 and 59 in two innings against the India Green and followed by 77 runs in the washed out game against India Red.
In the final game, Gambhir scored 94 and 36 runs respectively against India Green, which helped his team to clinch the title.
