Already having more interactions on the field with Virat Kohli: MS Dhoni

There are debates rising all over the country that now Virat Kohli should replace MS Dhoni in all formats of the game. The current Indian ODI and T20I skipper also seems to be well aware of this update or these ‘gossips’.

Therefore, a day before the start of 5 match ODI series against New Zealand, Dhoni said that he has started using Test skipper Virat Kohli’s advice more often on the field.

Talking about having different captains in different formats, Dhoni said : “I have started using him (Virat Kohli) more. there is more interaction. Its evident if you watch the game. Two individuals will conduct in different ways. The practical way is very important. A lot of time you can argue on the theory aspect, but practicality is what is during the game. We have a lot of chat on what needs to be done and he will give an example and if we are not on the same page, then I give my opinion.”

He further added, “I think we follow the west a lot. I think we follow west a lot . A few years back we spoke about split captaincy. Then we asked why not and now we are asking why. I think we look at the foreign teams and we are like we should do be doing that way. But culturally, we are very different. The amount of cricket that we play is very different.”

Dhoni is under immense pressure to perform as a captain. With the team going through a transition phase right now, there are speculations that the selectors might opt for one captain for all the formats and unless Dhoni performs well.

Speaking of his own role in the side, Dhoni said it hasn’t changed much but for the additional responsibility of mentoring the future generation of Indian cricket.

“Role doesn’t change when you are a senior member of the squad irrespective of whether you are captain or vice-captain. You have extra responsibility on you. You have to talk to the youngsters, you have to guide them,” Dhoni said.

“A lot of things have changed since I made my debut in 2004. The way cricket is played has changed. The kind of players that are coming in the Indian team are drastically different than what we were used to. My role is quite the same. You only evolve with time and that’s what I am trying to do,” the Captain Cool said.

The talismanic wicket-keeper concluded by explaining the role of a finisher in a team, as he said : “I personally feel a finisher is somebody who bats at 5 or 6. It is very difficult to come and fill in that opportunity because there would be times when you don’t even get an opportunity as the top-order does the bulk of the scoring. As far as identifying individuals who can be a finisher is concerned, yes we have identified a few but I would like to keep the names to ourselves, the reason being not to put an undue pressure on any individual.”
