India created history as they bagged the inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup by defeating England in the final on Sunday, January 29.

Asked to bat first, England were bundled out by the eventual champions for just 68 runs in 17.1 overs. Ryana Macdonald Gay (19) was the highest run-scorer for the English side. Meanwhile, India bowled brilliantly, with Titas Sadhu and Parshavi Chopra picking up two-two wickets.

In reply, the Women in Blue chased down the set target in 14 overs with seven wickets remaining and etched their name into the history books. Soumya Tiwari and Gongadi Trisha shined for India in their run chase scoring 24 runs each. On the other hand, Hannah Baker, Grace Scrivens and Alexa Stonehouse took a wicket each for England but couldn’t take their team through and ended up on the losing side.

Soon after India’s triumph, congratulatory messages from the former and active cricketers started flowing for the champion side. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also posted a video on Twitter featuring the senior men’s team sharing a message for the world cup winning team.

The video starts with head coach Rahul Dravid sharing a message on the triumph and then passing on the mic to Prithvi Shaw, a previous U19 World Cup-winning captain.

“Today was a landmark day for the Indian women’s U19 team and they had a fantastic day. I would like to pass it on to the winning U19 Boy’s captain to pass on a message for the girls,” said Dravid in a beautiful gesture towards Shaw.

Notably, Shaw and Dravid were part of the U-19 World Cup Winning team in 2018 as skipper and coach, respectively. The 23-year-old further appreciated the Women in Blue after being given the mic while the entire team cheered at the end from the background.

“I think it is a great achievement. Everyone wants to congratulate the U-19 women’s team. So, congratulations, well done, congrats,” said Shaw.
