South Africa‘s leading spinner Keshav Maharaj suffered a nasty injury on Day 4 of the recently-concluded second Test against West Indies at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The left-arm tweaker agonized over the injury while celebrating a wicket.

It all happened when Maharaj challenged the umpire’s call in his third over after hitting Kyle Mayers on the pad. When the three reds were shown on the big screen that would overturn the on-field call in his favour, Maharaj took off on a run to celebrate the dismissal. However, as soon as he began to run, the Durban-born cricketer pulled up when he twisted his ankle.

The spinner was immediately down on the ground and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. He was later taken for an MRI scan to determine the extent of his injury, which revealed significant damage, and he is now on crutches with a moon boot on his left leg.

Speaking about the match, the hosts set up a massive total of 391 runs for the tourists to win and level the series 1-1 on the back of captain Temba Bavuma‘s career-best 172. The Proteas bowling attack completely demolished the Windies’ batting unit, skittling them out for 106 in 35.1 overs to complete a 284-run win and a clean sweep of the 2-match series.

Spinner Simon Harmer and pacer Gerald Coetzee returned with figures of 3/45 and 3/37 in the second innings to set up a dominating victory for the home team. It was South Africa’s final game in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 cycle.

Brief Scores: South Africa 320 (Aiden Markram 96, Kyle Mayers 3/32) & 321 (Temba Bavuma 172, Kyle Mayers 3/46) beat West Indies 251 (Jason Holder 81*, Gerald Coetzee 3/41) & 106 (Joshua Da Silva 34, Gerald Coetzee 3/37, Simon Harmer 3/45) by 284 runs.
