Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in the 69th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday (May 21). However, MI still haven’t qualified for the playoffs, as their knockout hopes depend on the result of the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT).

Asked to bat first, SRH got off to a great start with Mayank Agarwal and debutant Vivrant Sharma adding 140 runs for the first wicket. While Mayank smashed quickfire 83 runs off 46 deliveries, Vivrant contributed valuable 69 runs to power Hyderabad to a competitive total of 200/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Meanwhile, Akash Madhwal was the star performer for the Mumbai-based team with the ball as he bagged a four wickets for 30 runs.

In reply, MI lost Ishan Kishan with just 20 runs on the board. Cameron Green and Rohit Sharma then batted brilliantly and webbed a 128-run partnership to ensure Mumbai’s win in the contest. Green hammered his maiden IPL ton in the contest and remained unbeaten on 100 off just 47 deliveries. Meanwhile, MI skipper Rohit scored 56 runs off 37 balls. Although Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mayank Dagar picked up one wicket each for the Sunrisers, the touring party lost the contest by eight wickets.

Notably, Green became the ninth centurion of the IPL 2023 and was adjudged ‘Player of the Match for his exceptional performance.
