Mumbai Indians (MI) took on Gujarat Titans (MI) in Match 57 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday where the hosts registered an impressive triumph.

Put in to bat, Mumbai got off to a great start, with their opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan adding 61 runs in the first six overs. However, Rashid Khan removed both the batters to reduce MI to 78/2.

Before GT could capitalise further, Suryakumar Yadav, came up with a counter attack and demolished GT’s bowling unit. Surya took GT bowlers to the cleaners en route to his first century in the cash-rich league. The right-handed batter played a magnificent innings of 103 off just 49 balls, which included 11 fours and 6 sixes. Mumbai eventually finished at 218/5 in 20 overs.

In response, the Titans got off to a poor start, losing their opening batsman Wriddhiman Saha early. Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya also failed to make an impact, leaving Gujarat Titans struggling at 21/3. Vijay Shankar and David Miller steadied the innings with a 60-run partnership, but it wasn’t enough as the required run rate kept climbing.

Rashid, however, kept GT in the game and played a splendid knock of 79 runs off just 32 balls, hitting 3 fours and 10 sixes. However, it was too little too late as Gujarat fell short of the target by 27 runs. For Mumbai, Akash Madhwal was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 wickets for 31 runs in his 4 overs. Piyush Chawla and Kumar Kartikeya also picked up 2 wickets each.
