Dawid Malan, renowned for his explosive batting in the T20I format, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37. This decision marks the end of a distinguished career that saw him become one of England’s top performers across all formats.

A stellar career across formats

Malan’s international career spanned 22 Test matches, 30 ODIs, and 62 T20Is. Notably, he was one of only two England men’s batters, alongside Jos Buttler, to have scored centuries in all three formats. Despite his impressive record, Malan has not been part of an England squad since the 50-over World Cup in India last year. His retirement comes after he was omitted from the upcoming white-ball series against Australia.

T20I excellence and record-breaking feats

In September 2020, Malan achieved the pinnacle of T20I batting by reaching the top of the ICC rankings. By March of the following year, he had set a record as the fastest men’s player to accumulate 1000 T20I runs, reaching the milestone in just 24 innings. His consistency was highlighted by his ability to score double figures in all but one of those innings. Malan was also part of the England squad that won the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022, although he missed the knock-out stages due to a groin injury sustained against Sri Lanka.

Future in T20 franchise cricket

With his international career now concluded, Malan is expected to be a highly sought-after player in the T20 franchise circuit. Recently, he played a key role for the Oval Invincibles in the Men’s Hundred, leading them to victory. Additionally, he contributed to Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s triumph in the second season of the SA20 last winter.
