BCCI  has not yet officially announced the retention rules for the upcoming IPL mega-auction. However, it is reported that the board may revisit an old rule at the request of Chennai Super Kings, potentially allowing the franchise to retain former India captain MS Dhoni.

The rule in question categorizes players who have been retired from international cricket for over five years as uncapped. This rule was in effect from the inaugural IPL season until 2021 but was discontinued as no franchises made use of it. According to a reports, during a recent meeting between IPL franchise owners and the BCCI on July 31, Chennai Super Kings proposed reinstating the rule, with the management urging the board to bring it back.

Although MS Dhoni is no longer the captain, his legacy with CSK remains significant. The 43-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been with CSK since the inaugural IPL season and has led the team to five titles.
