In a twist that caught fans and cricket pundits alike off guard, Shreyas Iyer, known predominantly for his brilliance as a top-order batter, surprised everyone with his uncharacteristic bowling during a match between Tamil Nadu XI and Mumbai XI in the Buchi Babu Tournament. More surprising than his decision to bowl was the style he adopted—eerily reminiscent of his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) teammate and renowned mystery spinner Sunil Narine.
Shreyas Iyer mimics Sunil Narine
Iyer, who captained KKR to victory in the IPL 2024, has earned his reputation for his aggressive batting and sharp captaincy. However, his bowling skills have rarely been in the spotlight—until now. In a nod to Narine, Iyer was seen mimicking the West Indian spinner’s trademark technique of hiding the ball behind his hand before delivering it. This strategy, often employed by Narine, aims to deceive batters by preventing them from reading the type of delivery before it’s too late.

Tamil Nadu stands strong at the end of Day 1
Tamil Nadu ended Day 1 of their match against Mumbai on a solid note, putting up a resilient score of 294/5. A determined batting display from the host team was led by half-centuries from Pradosh Ranjan Paul, Baba Indrajith and Boopathi Vaishna Kumar.
Pradosh set the tone for Tamil Nadu’s innings with a composed and well-crafted knock, followed by Indrajith, who anchored the middle order with a similarly impactful performance. Both batters ensured Tamil Nadu maintained a steady run flow after the initial breakthroughs. Adding to the solid foundation, Boopathi played a crucial role, not only reaching his half-century but remaining at the crease, holding the innings together as the day drew to a close.
Meanwhile, Mumbai’s bowlers faced an uphill battle but found some success with off-spinner Tanush Kotian and left-arm spinner Himanshu Singh taking two wickets each. Their efforts, though commendable, were not enough to dismantle Tamil Nadu’s batting lineup, which remained composed despite the loss of key wickets.
