Buddy system re-introduced in Indian cricket

Former leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who was named as the head coach of Indian team last week, without further ado has started his role.

In the training session ahead of West Indies tour, he has re-introduced the “Buddy System” which was prevalent during John Wright’s tenure.

What is ‘Buddy system’ ?

In this concept, one player is paired with another so that by mutual symbiosis and understanding the level of both can be raised. Generally, a bowler is paired with a batsman and vice versa, or a batsman/bowler is teamed up with an all-rounder. Communication is the key in this system and it breeds good culture and trust among the team.

During Wright’s tenure as a coach, Zaheer Khan was reportedly paired up with VVS Laxman with the latter becoming the batting coach of the left-arm pacer.

In the current scenario, Stuart Binny and Rohit Sharma, Amit Mishra and Cheteshwar Pujara while Virat Kohli and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been paired up as a team.
