As the auction dates of the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) are inching closer, franchises are busy chalking out strategies over their team combinations. Most of them have managed to retain their core members around which the team will revolve.
But, there are some franchises, who are looking forward to an entire revamp of their team structure. Kings XI Punjab who failed to make an impact in last ten seasons is one such bunch.
The Bollywood actress Preity Zinta co-owned franchise retained only Akshar Patel in the IPL retention event and now have a plenty of money left in their purse, INR 67.5 Crs.
With 2 RTMs in the kitty, KXIP could possibly knock over the biggest takeover in IPL auction history. Still, to win an IPL trophy, this season Punjab hope to build new kingdom once again.
According to KXIP CEO, Satish Menon, the South African skipper Faf du Plessis could be the fulcrum of Punjab’s most adored and treasured sports side.
“The good thing about the fate is that it will change one day. Last few years haven’t been good for us. Fans still supported the team during the bad times. And they want better. You may never know that we might resurge in this season with Faf du Plessis as the Kings XI Punjab’s skipper,” Menon said in a recent interview.
Du Plessis started his IPL stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but after the ban on the franchise, he was bought by Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in 2016. The stylish batsman only managed to feature in eight matches for the Pune based franchise in the past two years. However, Faf has played 53 IPL matches and scored 1295 runs at a strike rate of 127.
Meanwhile, KXIP mentor Virender Sehwag has also hinted that the franchise could pick Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh, giving their side a ‘desi Punjabi tadka’. He also mentioned that KXIP could deploy the RTM for Glenn Maxwell and David Miller.
Therefore, in IPL 2018 fans could witness the rise of the Kings from the land of green revolution, leading domestic T20 supremacy.
