David Warner has stood down from the captaincy of his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Warner followed the footsteps of Steve Smith, who on Monday stood down as skipper of Rajasthan Royals for the upcoming season.
Both players are on IPL contracts worth INR 12 crores as the highest-paid Australian players in the cash-rich tournament.
Warner’s decision has come off after his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal during the 3rd Test against South Africa in Cape Town. He has also been suspended for the fourth Test in Johannesburg and sent back home from the Rainbow Nation.
“In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain of SunRisers Hyderabad. The new captain of the Team will be announced shortly,” said K.Shanmugam, CEO of SunRisers Hyderabad.
