Ashes 2019: Ben Stokes reveals what he ate before his heroic performance in 3rd Test

Superstar all-rounder Ben Stokes’ explosive knock of 135 not out took his team over the line. England registered a historic one-wicket win over Australia in the Third Test at Headingley.

The Ashes series is now levelled at 1-1 with two more Test matches to be played at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester and Kennington Oval, London.

Meanwhile, Stokes revealed that fried chicken and a couple of chocolate bars helped him play the way he did.

Here’s the video –

He said: “Last night, I had a knock-off Nandos and two bars of Yorkie biscuit and raisin. And a couple of coffees this morning.”

“The previous evening, my wife and kids came down, got to the hotel around 10 pm and walked in with me eating pasta in my boxer shorts!”

Undoubtedly, Ben Stokes played one of the most magnificent innings of all time. He impressed yet again with his match-winning knock, which is being hailed as better than his World Cup final performance.

“It’s certainly close. Walking off at the end when the whole of Headingley was standing up and celebrating was a very special moment and something I had to try to take in.”

“It was an amazing game to be a part of and to keep our Ashes hopes alive is a fantastic feeling. We knew if we’d lost, the Ashes were gone. To be sat here with a chance of winning back the urn is amazing, especially after being bowled out for 67,” the England vice-captain added.

Skipper Joe Root was all praise for the left-hander –

“Ben Stokes is a freak, he’s incredible. I can’t put that win into words, it was just ridiculous, wasn’t it?”

“For Ben to play in that manner was incredible. He had the experience of the World Cup final but to do it in Test cricket, where there are no restrictions on field placing, shows incredible calmness, skill and resilience. Just phenomenal.”

He also hailed Stokes as a ‘team man,’ who was greatly respected by his teammates.

“Ben is the ultimate team man. He would do anything for every single one of us. That’s why he is the perfect vice-captain. He is an intelligent cricketer and he drags people with him. He has so much respect in the dressing-room.”

Root also opened up about the nail-biting and edge-of-the-seat thriller, and England’s much-needed victory.

“This win has given us a huge amount of belief, this is so special. It shows the character and courage of this team. Games like that make Test cricket the best. The game had everything.”
