Selectors should speak to players: Virender Sehwag opens up about MS Dhoni’s future in the team

Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni made himself unavailable for India’s tour of West Indies due to injury. The selection committee picked youngster Rishabh Pant for the tournament in place of Dhoni.

During the team announcement, chief selector MSK Prasad said, “See retirement is purely individual. A legendary cricketer like MS Dhoni, they know when to retire but what is the future course of action, what is the roadmap that we will have to create, look at, is in hands of the selection committee“.

Indian legend Virender Sehwag feels that the selection committee should speak with MS Dhoni regarding his future. “That is Dhoni’s personal call. If he thinks he is fit and can contribute like he used to, then why not continue. But if the selectors think that MSD can’t contribute, then they should tell him that we are giving you this last series. That should be communicated“, told Sehwag to Hindustan Times.

Sehwag was dropped from the team in 2013 and could never make a comeback in the squad. Due to the lack of communication between him and the selectors, he didn’t get a chance to play the retirement game. He said, “That communication should always be there between the selectors and the player. Don’t know whether the selectors have [that communication] or not. We have only read MSK [Prasad] giving a statement about selectors conveying to MSD that he is not their first choice. So, that means they’ll pick Pant first and then if they have to pick a second keeper, they’ll pick Dhoni. That is not possible. After a time, Dhoni should decide and speak to selectors and ask for a retirement game. That is when he feels it is the right time to quit.

Not the board, but the selectors. I think the selectors should speak to players. Communication has been a problem. Nobody communicated with me. I feel there were others too like me.“, Sehwag concluded.
