Ashes 2019: England drop Jason Roy and pick Sam Curran for fifth and final Test

England have dropped Jason Roy for the fifth and final Ashes Test against Australia.

The one-day star has failed to impress in the first four matches of the series, either as an opener or when he was brought down the order last time out at Old Trafford, where he made a top score of 31.

Along with Roy, Craig Overton has also been left out for the clash at the Oval, with Sam Curran and Chris Woakes taking their places.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), on Wednesday, also confirmed that Ben Stokes will not bowl in the final Test due to a shoulder injury, and will play as a specialist batsman.

While Australia have retained the Ashes Urn after their first series win on the English soil since 2001, Joe Root’s side still have a chance to draw the series if they manage to beat the Aussies in the final Test.

England’s playing XI for fifth and final Ashes Test:

Joe Root (captain), Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow (wicketkeeper), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes.
