CPL 2019: Andre Russell stretchered off after suffering a blow on the helmet

Explosive West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell suffered a nasty blow on the head while batting in a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match on Thursday. Russell was playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs at Sabina Park. Post the incident, he was immediately rushed to the hospital for a CT scan.

St Lucia Zouks fast bowler Hardus Viljoen’s short ball had hit Russell’s helmet near the right ear.

The 31-year-old fell on the ground, and the Zouks’ fielders helped him remove his helmet. However, when the medical team arrived to check Russell’s condition, the right-hander was able to stand up on his feet.

Jamaica Tallawahs tweeted – “Andre Russell has been stretched off, after being hit by Viljoen. Get well soon Dre Russ! #FiWiTallawahs #JamaicaTallawahs #CPL19 #CricketPlayedLouder #Sports #Jamaica #cricket”

The big-hitting Jamaican started walking off the field with a brace on his neck. He couldn’t make the long walk back to the pavilion, and hence, a stretcher was arranged.

Tallawahs head coach Donovan Miller said that there wasn’t any fresh update on Andre Russell’s injury as of now.

In the meantime, this is what the official page of the Caribbean Premier League posted on Twitter –

“RUSSELL UPDATE: Andre Russell has gone to hospital for a scan. He left the field on a stretcher earlier having been hit on the head by a bouncer.”

Later on, an update from the franchise confirmed that Russell was in no such danger as the injury was not a serious one.

They wrote – “UPDATE: Russell has been cleared of any damage. He will head back to the team hotel.”

Jamaica Tallawahs put 170 runs on the board in their stipulated 20 overs, which St Lucia Zouks easily chased down with 20 balls remaining.
