Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan made his international debut under MS Dhoni’s captaincy and swore by the former India skipper’s penchant for understanding each player’s strengths and weaknesses.
Dhawan believes that Dhoni, who has taken so many important decisions in Indian cricket, should be the person to decide as far his future is concerned.
“Dhoni has been playing for so long; I feel he understands when he should retire. This should be his decision. He has taken very important decisions so far for India in his career and I’m sure he will make the call when the time comes,” Dhawan said on India TV’s talk show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ hosted by Rajat Sharma.
Dhawan said Dhoni knows what potential a player holds and to what extent he should be backed while adding that the veteran wicketkeeper knows how to make a champion out a player. The southpaw revealed that Dhoni’s control is his biggest quality.
The members of the current team, including skipper Virat Kohli, have immense reverence for the veteran stumper.
“Dhoni bhai has been quite successful as the captain of the side. We are all very grateful to him and we respect him a lot, and the same goes for Virat,” Dhawan said.
The 33-year-old also spoke about the strong bond that Kohli and Dhoni share.
“When Virat was young, he guided him immensely. Even when he became the captain, Dhoni bhai was always there to help him. This is the quality of a leader. It’s good to see that Virat is showing his gratitude to him now, both are great players,” he added.
Virat took the captaincy duties from MSD in Tests in December 2014, when the wicketkeeper-batsman announced his retirement from the longest format of the game.
Dhoni resigned as the captain of the Indian team in the limited-overs in January 2017, following which Virat assumed captaincy in all the three formats.
