Teenager Priya Punia was handed over an ODI cap on Wednesday (October 9) on the eve of India women’s first ODI of the five-match series against South Africa women.

The 23-year-old made a memorable outing for herself and the team as she led the Women in Blue to an emphatic eight-wicket win in Vadodara and handed a 1-0 lead to the Mithali Raj-led side versus Sune Luus & Co.

Here are some interesting facts about Priya Punia:

  1. Born on August 6, 1996, Priya started playing cricket at the age of 7.
  2. She was once denied admissions in a cricket academy for being a girl then her father sold his home to set up a practice pitch for her daughter.
  3. Priya did her graduation in commerce from Jesus and Mary College in Delhi.
  4. She is a movie freak and loves to listen to Punjabi music.
  5. The only superstition she follows is to wear a leg guard on her left leg while batting.
  6. Priya is fascinated by Harmapreet Kaur’s huge sixes, Virat Kohli is her role model and she grew up watching Rahul Dravid’s game.
  7. She made her international debut on February 6, 2019, during the first T20I against New Zealand in Wellington.
  8. Priya was the ‘Player of the Match’ in the Women’s IPL 2019 final between Supernovas and Velocity.
