Starting a new life in red-ball cricket as an opener, Rohit Sharma smashed an unbeaten century in his new role as India comfortably reached 202/0 before rain stopped play on Day 1 of the opening Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.
Rohit scored an unbeaten 115 off 174 balls, while Mayank Agarwal too was on course for a century, reaching 84 off 183 balls at stumps.
The Mumbaikar reached to his fifty before lunch, shifted gears and was particularly harsh on the Proteas spinners. He smacked off-spinner Danie Piedt for consecutive sixes over deep midwicket to get into the nineties before completing his fourth Test hundred with a single off debutant Senuran Muthusamy.
As soon as Rohit completed his century, the whole dressing room gave a standing ovation and applauded him for his brilliant knock. Virat Kohli and Co. looked graciously happy over their teammate’s success.
A splendid century by Rohit Sharma! He carries forward his #WorldCup2019 form to the test match now. Opening innings for the 1st time for #TeamIndia, he has set up a good foundation for a huge 1st innings score.@ImRo45 @BCCI @ICC @mipaltan #INDvsSA #RohitSharma #Hitman pic.twitter.com/ovLoi3gjRQ
