On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-member squad for the 2020 U-19 World Cup, which will take place in South Africa in January next year.
Priyam Garg, the Uttar Pradesh batsman, will lead the team in the mega event. Wicket-keeper batsman Dhruv Chand, who also belongs to UP, has been named as the vice-captain of the side.
Speaking about the fixtures, India has been placed in Group A. The Boys in Blue will meet New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Japan, who are making their debut in the tournament.
In August this year, Garg also led the junior side during the tri-series in England, where India defeated Bangladesh in the finals by six wickets.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Divyansh Saksena, who were amongst the top five run-getters in the tri-series, have been named in the squad. Hyderabad’s Thakur Tilak Verma also finds a place in the final 15.
Jaiswal came into limelight when he slammed a double-hundred for Mumbai during the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The left-hander scored 203 runs from 154 balls. He also became the youngest batsman to hit 200 in List A cricket.
Top wicket-takers in England’s tri-series; Sushant Mishra and Kartik Tyagi also feature in the World Cup squad along with pacer Akash Singh from Rajasthan and Karnataka’s Vidhyadhar Patil.
When it comes to the spin department, then Atharva Ankolekar and Shubhang Hegde have been picked for the World Cup squad.
India will start their campaign against neighbor Sri Lanka on January 19 at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein.
