ICC U19 World Cup 2020: New Zealand wins a thriller against Sri Lanka, South Africa thrashes Canada

South Africa and New Zealand have registered their first win in the ongoing U19 World Cup.

The Proteas lost the opening game of the competition against Afghanistan, but in the second match, they bounced back and thrashed Canada comprehensively.

Skipper Bryce Parsons led from the front and smashed a blistering hundred to guide his team to 349/8, which is also the highest score of the tournament so far. Apart from Bryce, opener Jonathan Bird and middle-order batsman Tyrese Karelse scored vital half-centuries.

In reply, Canada bent their knees to the mammoth total. They were bundled out for just 199 and lost the game by 150 runs. The Proteas leader Bryce was gratified with the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

In another match, New Zealand claimed their first victory after defeating Sri Lanka in a nail-biting contest. The first match of the Blackcaps was abandoned due to rain against Japan.

In their second game of the tournament, after winning the toss, the Kiwis asked Sri Lanka to bat first and restricted them on 242-9 in 50 overs.

Chasing the target of 243, the Jesse Tashkoff-led side won the game in the last over when Kristian Clarke hit six in the second last ball of New Zealand’s innings. Beckham Wheeler-Greenall got the ‘Player of the Match’ for his 111-ball 80 runs.
