Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope dug in with a fifth-wicket partnership of 76 as England ended the opening day of the crucial third Test against South Africa at 224-4.
After a solid morning session which saw openers Zak Crawley (44) and Dominic Sibley (36) put on 61, South Africa fought back by taking both their wickets in the afternoon. Joe Denly (25) followed before captain Joe Root (27) was clean bowled by Kagiso Rabada, but Stokes (38*) and Pope (39*) rallied as England hope to get ahead in the game with the series poised at 1-1.
England claimed a dramatic victory in the Cape Town Test after a disappointing performance in the series opener at Centurion.
