ZIM vs SL: Angelo Mathews smashes his maiden Test double ton to put Sri Lanka in commanding position

Angelo Matthews scored his career’s maiden double ton in Test cricket against Zimbabwe on Day 4 of the first Test in Harare and put Sri Lanka on the driving seat.

It would be a special moment for Mathews as he had a rough patch in the longest format of the game till now. This was also the first hundred for the former Sri Lankan skipper since December 2018.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Mathews started the innings on the fourth day and added 98 runs stand to take their team into a strong position. De Silva reached his sixth Test fifty and was looking settled, but Victor Nyauchi got him at 63.

Mathews, however, didn’t stop and kept on scoring runs at the other end as he reached his first double century. Wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella stitched a 136-run partnership with Mathews before getting got out on 63.

Sri Lanka declared their first at 515-9 in 176.2 overs.

Earlier, Zimbabwe posted 358 runs in their first innings, with Craig Ervine playing a crucial knock of 85 runs along with Kevin Kasuza and Prince Masvaure, who smashed 63 and 55 runs, respectively.
