Hosts Australia rode on attacking half-centuries from openers Alyssa Healy (75) and Beth Mooney (78*) to lift their fifth Women’s T20 World Cup title on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Having posted a mammoth 184/4 on the board, Australia restricted opponents India for a paltry 99, winning the record final by 85 runs.
India’s long wait for an elusive Women’s T20 World Cup trophy got elongated even further as they lagged behind the Aussies in every department of the game.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
To make it to the final of the @T20WorldCup unbeaten, to come out in front of 90k people, despite the nerves & fight till the end, requires courage, skill & strength of character. All of which you have. You are our heroes, no matter what the result. 💙🇮🇳 @BCCIWomen #WT20WC pic.twitter.com/NROYjDqMrO

This final is an action replay of the 2003 #CWC final between the same sides.#WT20WC

I actually believe India did really well to get to the final without a major contribution from either Mandhana or Harmanpreet. For India to win, those two needed to have big tournaments. Hence my opinion that there is enough here to be optimistic about.

Instead of being overawed by the expectation of a home World Cup final at a packed MCG, Australia have thrived on it. Healy calmed the nerves early. India looked intimidated unfortunately. They will learn from it one hopes.

Harmanpreet Kaur scored more than three times as many runs in her first innings of the 2018 #T20WorldCup as she has in the entirety of the 2020 tournament.
