SA vs AUS: JJ Smuts steers South Africa to whitewash the ODI series

South Africa defeated Australia in the third One Day International (ODI) at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

The Quinton de Kock-led chased down the set target of 255 inside 46 overs and swept the ODI series 3-0.

JJ Smuts shined with the bat as he scored 84 off 98 balls. Apart from him, the 31-year-old batsman Kyle Verreynne also contributed with a half-century. Both the batsmen added a crucial 96-run stand for the third wicket after South Africa lost first-two wickets for 54.

Pretoria-born Heinrich Klaasen took his team over the line as he remained unbeaten on 68 off 63 balls. For the Aussies, Josh Hazlewood picked two wickets, while Kane Richardson and spinner Adam Zampa bagged one wicket each.

Earlier, Australia’s middle-order batsman Marnus Labuschagne, who had a terrific run in Test cricket, shimmered on return to his South African roots in the third ODI game.

The 25-year-old slammed his maiden century in the 50-over format. Labuschagne scored 108 to help his side post a competitive total of 254-7. For the Proteas, pacer Anrich Nortje and all-rounder Smuts picked two wickets each.
