When cricketers become legends of the game, they are bound to be compared with the greatest. The comparisons between captaincy of MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly sparked off several debates on the streets of the country.
Now, the parameter of players flourishing under different captains is also taken into account while making the comparisons.
An interesting case study is that of Yuvraj Singh, who perhaps is the most flamboyant yet elegant batsman produced by the country.
Yuvi came into international reckoning during Dada’s tenure as captain of the team. However, Yuvraj gained stardom after winning two World Cups under MSD.
Former Indian fast-bowler, Ashish Nehra, who also flourished under Dada’s captaincy, made the call, choosing between Yuvraj’s performance under Ganguly and Dhoni.
“Yuvraj has played well under MS Dhoni, as far as I have seen Yuvraj’s career, the way he has batted in 2007 and 2008 onwards it has been impeccable,” Nehra told Star Sports.
“And in 2011 we saw how he braved his sickness and played brilliantly under Dhoni. I feel every player has their own choice of a favourite captain when they play for 16 years, and Yuvraj played well under Dhoni according to me,” affirmed Nehra.
Ganguly took over the reins of the Indian team in the aftermath of the match-fixing scandal which stained the image of Indian cricket.
Dada transformed a struggling Indian side, into a match-winning team, as India started to win matches abroad and played with a never-seen-before fearless approach.
With Dhoni taking over, the Indian team started winning ICC titles, namely the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. Also, India reached the Test summit under MSD in 2010.
Therefore, Yuvi managed to flourish at number four in limited-overs cricket under both captains during his illustrious 17-year long career.
