When it comes to romantic gestures, it seems like Indian cricketers can put Bollywood heroes behind. One such cricketer is Team India ace batsman Hanuma Vihari.
Although Hanuma might come across as a shy yet sensible kind of a person, he’s true romantic at heart and has had some very Bollywood-style escapades in the past.
In a recent interview on Cricbuzz’s Spicy Pitch, Hanuma recalled the time when he and his best friend were at a club in Hyderabad till well past midnight and then went to a drive-in for a dinner.
That’s when Hanuma had a sudden urge to meet his girlfriend, Preethi. The only problem was, she lived with her parents in Warangal— a good three hours away from the city.
So, at 1 am, Hanuma and his friend set off for Warangal. His friend still had two plates of dinner in either hand, biryani and some sambar-rice. When they finally reached Warangal, the house was locked, and Preethi couldn’t come down.
That should have been the end of it, but Hanuma (being as love-struck as he was) decided to climb over the wall and find his way to Preethi. His friend immediately took the driver’s seat, and started the car, ready to get going the moment Hanuma came running out of the house.
Luckily, Hanuma didn’t get caught that day, and his love story had a delightful ending. After a lot of resistance from Preethi’s parents (theirs is an inter-caste match), the couple finally managed to persevere and got married in May 2019.
Earlier during the interview, Hanuma mentioned about the length and breadths his mother went through to accomplish his dream of representing the country. The Hyderabad batsman, trained by the same coach as VVS Laxman, currently has 9 international caps to his name in Test cricket.
