During a recent interaction between former India and Mumbai Indians colleagues Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma, the latter tagged Punjab batsman Shubman Gill as the future of Indian cricket.

Gill was an integral part of India’ A’ setup where he accumulated heaps of runs. His performances pushed his case into the reckoning for a spot in the national side.

Also, the flamboyant stroke maker received attention during his stint at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 20-year-old earlier hogged all the limelight during India’s 2018 U19 World Cup win.

“Shubhman Gill is a very fluent batsman. I think he is India’s future. I feel when he gets chances, if he scores runs, he will get that confidence. Now he doesn’t know when he’ll play. He’s done well in the domestic circuit, I think we should get him into the team,” Rohit stated on Gill’s place in the senior side.

Ahead of Gill, Prithvi Shaw was provided with the opportunity to bat in the two-Test match series against New Zealand. Gill’s was on a run-scoring spree during India’ A’ tour of New Zealand.

“Good to see that Prithvi Shaw was backed and brought back in the team. But I feel when you were not available, they should have gone with Shubman. I feel this is not healthy for him or the team. They need to give him a chance, and the same case applies to any other youngster,” Harbhajan said.

After a harrowing defeat in the Wellington Test match, Kohli was expected to make room for Gill in the lineup, to strengthen the Indian batting lineup.

Instead, Kohli went ahead with the same lineup. India lost the two-Test match series comprehensively. Moreover, Gill got the only opportunity in the One-dayers against the Kiwis last season in 2018.
