Virat Kohli-led India are no more the No. 1 ranked-Test team as Tim Paine’s Australia have become the new table-toppers in the longest format of the game. In the latest released International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings, India have slipped to the third position with Australia securing the top spot and New Zealand moving up to the second position.

“India have yielded the top spot for the first time since October 2016. This is largely because India had won 12 Tests and lost just one Test in 2016-17, the records of which were removed in the latest update,” an ICC statement said.

“They had won all five series during this period including against Australia and England. On the other hand, Australia had lost to South Africa as well as to India in the same period.”

India still on top of the ICC World Test Championship table

Notably, India’s last international assignment was a Test series in New Zealand in which they were whitewashed 2-0. It was India’s first major overseas assignment of 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the entire world to a grinding halt.

India still leads the ICC World Test Championship, a league comprising of six series to played by each of the top nine Test sides.

Australia clinch No. 1 T20I spot for the first time in history

Meanwhile, Australia have dethroned Pakistan in the ICC T20I rankings, becoming the new leaders of the shortest format.

Australia have topped the list for the first time since the T20I rankings were introduced in 2011. Pakistan, who had overtaken New Zealand to reach the top position in January 2018 and then spent 27 months there, are now at the fourth position.

England have moved up to the second position while India are placed at the third spot.
