Veteran stumper MS Dhoni’s future with the Indian team has been a topic of debate since the World Cup-winning captain took a sabbatical for an indefinite period from international cricket. The 38-year-old last played for his national team during the 2019 World Cup in the semi-finals against New Zealand and since then rumours of him hanging his boots from all formats of the game have been doing rounds on social media.

On Wednesday #DhoniRetires started trending on Twitter, which left the wicket-keeper’s fans in shock. As soon as the trend began, Dhoni fans started posting their favourite memories of the Indian veteran on the microblogging site.

Dhoni’s wife Sakshi too took to Twitter to rubbish all such rumours.

“Its only rumours! I understand Lockdown has made people mentally unstable! #DhoniRetires .. Get a life!” Sakshi Singh tweeted.

However, Sakshi deleted her tweet soon as it went viral on the social media platform.

Dhoni’s return was much anticipated with the arrival of IPL 2020 this year as he was back to the field sweating it hard for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, the BCCI had to postpone the tournament indefinitely due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former Indian cricketers divided on MS Dhoni’s return to Team India

Recently, CSK vice-captain Suresh Raina said Dhoni did not show any signs of ageing and that he was hitting the big sixes at will, as usual during the training camp in Chennai. Laxmipathy Balaji, bowling coach of the Super Kings, also vouched for Dhoni’s return.

On the other hand, former wicketkeeper-batsman, Deep Dasgupta had said that Dhoni should have kept playing domestic cricket if he aspired a return to the Indian team. Kris Srikkanth also noted that if this year IPL does not take place, Dhoni’s return looks impossible. Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra also had similar views to those of Srikkanth.
