One-day cricket is one of the most challenging fronts for bowlers in international cricket. A bowler has only ten overs to prove his mettle in this form of the game.
Moreover, the bowler has the white ball, instead of the red, to make sure his skills are in place. Only after some amount of expertise, a bowler can express his abilities in One-day Internationals.
However, there have been a few who immediately made an impact in their very first game. Today, let’s have a look at the top five bowlers with the best figures in ODI cricket on debut:
1.) Uvais Karnain
During his ODI debut against New Zealand, back in 1984, the Sri Lankan picked a five-wicket haul. It turned out to be the fifth-best figure in the 50-over format. Karnain conceded only 26 runs in his eight overs.
2.) Tony Dodemaide
The Australian fast bowler on his debut ended up with his figures of 5/21 against Sri Lanka, back in 1988. In his seven overs and a couple of deliveries, he conceded only 21 runs. Thereby, finishing with the fourth-best figure by a bowler on debut in ODI Cricket.
3.) Jan Frylinck
This one was a more recent incident when a bowler picked up a fifer on his debut. The game between Namibia and Oman at Windhoek in April 2019, turned out to be special for Frylinck as he picked a five-wicket haul and conceded only 13 in his eight overs.
4.) Fidel Edwards
The feisty West Indies pacer impressed in his very first ODI game against Zimbabwe in 2003 at Harare, by picking up a six-wicket haul on debut. His figures of 22/6 are the second-best by a bowler on debut.
5.) Kagiso Rabada
South African pace spearhead, on his debut in ODIs, picked six wickets against Bangladesh at Dhaka.
Rabada, who is amongst the best bowlers currently, ended up with 16/6 in his eight overs which also included a hat-trick and is the best by any bowler on debut.
