Fans in Sri Lanka are on cloud nine regarding the upcoming domestic T20 competition, the Lankan Premier League (LPL). The Sri Lanka Cricket board is yet to come up with the fixtures of the league, but it has been confirmed that the exciting tournament will feature players from across the world.
A total of five teams which have been named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will be participating in the tournament. And, because it’s a franchise-based competition, every state will have some unique name to attract the fans.
Although, the SLC is hasn’t yet confirmed, but as per a report in the Sunday Times, the teams’ names are Colombo Super Kings, Galle Lions, Kandy Royals, Jaffna Sunrisers and Dambulla Capitals.
Fans were quick to notice the similarity of these teams’ names as the titles appear to be inspired by IPL franchises.
Colombo’s team name has been inspired by Chennai Super Kings while Jaffna has been taken from Sunrisers Hyderabad. Similarly, Kandy and Dambulla are inspired by IPL franchises Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals. When it comes to Galle, then it looks to be inspired by Gujarat Lions, who were part of IPL in 2016 and 2017.
Famous sports statistician Mohandas Menon tweeted that five franchises of Lanka Premier League have taken a cue from popular teams of IPL.
“You get a deja vu feeling, with the names of the teams for the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL),” Menon wrote.
