Australian superstar Glenn Maxwell impressed one and all with his epic show in the 13th match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22 between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers on Wednesday. The Victorian took the Sixers’ bowlers to the cleaners as he smashed his maiden century in BBL at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Maxwell scored a remarkable 103 off just 57 deliveries to help his side post a massive 177/5 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. The right-handed batter hit as many as 15 boundaries during his scintillating knock, including three sixes.
Sixers quick Chris Jordan and spinner Steve O’ Keefe were the pick of the bowlers, with both conceding 24 runs in their respective 4 overs and bagging one wicket each. Maxwell’s national teammate Aaron Finch was in all praise for the power-hitter as he considered the innings as ‘brutal’ with ‘phenomenal hitting’.
“That was a brutal innings. He scored all around the wicket. He was dominant leg-side. But he still accessed that off-side particularly late in the innings. It was just phenomenal hitting. When he is batting on instinct, he is so dangerous and so brutal on an attack. When he looks to premeditate, he can get a little too fancy, but that was just brutal,” said Finch on Fox Cricket.
However, Maxwell’s incredible effort with the bat went in vain as Josh Philippe‘s unbeaten 99 overshadowed it, with Sixers successfully chasing down the target in the final over.
Philippe, who came to open the innings, carried his bat and pulled off a memorable win for his side with two balls to spare and seven wickets in hand. The wicketkeeper-batter belted 11 fours and two sixes during the successful chase. Apart from Philippe, captain Moises Henriques (29 off 20) and Jordan Silk (25 no) chipped in with valuable contributions. For the stars, Adam Zampa, with 1/28 in his quota of 4 overs, was the least expensive bowler.
