Team India defeated West Indies in the first T20I by six wickets at Eden Gardens in Kolkata to go 1-0 up in the three-match series.

Chasing 158, the home team went off to an impressive start, with skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan forming a dominating opening stand of 64 runs. Rohit scored a quickfire 19-ball 40 with the help of 4 fours and 3 sixes before Roston Chase dismissed him.

India lost Kishan (35), Virat Kohli (17), and Rishabh Pant (8) in quick successions before Suryakuamar Yadav (34 not out) and Venkatesh Iyer (24 not out) formed an unbeaten partnership of 48 runs for the fifth wicket to take the hosts over the finish line.

Earlier, after being put to bat first, West Indies posted 157/7 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. Debutant Ravi Bishnoi shined with the ball for the hosts, taking a couple of wickets for just 17 runs in his quota of 4 overs.

With his figures of 2/17, Bishnoi scripted a record as he joined the elite list of India bowlers who have picked up 2 or more wickets on their debut in the shortest format. Apart from the leg-spinner, Harshal Patel also picked up two scalps for 37 in 4 overs.

For the visitors, Nicholas Pooran top-scored with 61 from 43 deliveries with the help of nine boundaries, including five sixes. Opener Kyle Mayers (31) and captain Kieron Pollard (24 not out) chipped in with valuable contributions to take Windies to a competitive total.
