Delhi Capitals (DC) registered an important win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in their first match of IPL 2022 on Sunday at the Brabourne Stadium.
All-rounders Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel played a crucial role in DC’s hard-fought victory as the duo added an unbeaten 75-run partnership for the seventh wicket. While Axar scored an unbeaten 38 off 17, Lalit remained not out on 48 (38), with Delhi winning the game in 18.4 overs.
Earlier, after being put to bat first, MI started pretty well. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan stitched a 67-run stand for the opening wicket. DC, meanwhile, managed to keep things in check and kept on picking wickets at regular intervals.
However, the fall of wickets did not deter Kishan at the other end as he continued to score runs, hitting the odd boundaries. He returned unbeaten on 81 as MI managed to post a competitive total of 177/5 in their 20 overs. For DC, Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets for 18 runs.

What a game @mipaltan vs @DelhiCapitals Superb batting by @ishankishan51 .. but @akshar2026 @LalitYadav03 partnership was the difference .. Great win for Delhi .. @imShard changed the momentum in the middle overs .. Good flexible thinking Ricky 💥

Fantastic win for Delhi Capitals. Mumbai Indians had the match under control but kudos to Lalit Yadav & Axar Patel to get DC over the line. Dropped catch of Axar proved very costly. MI have lost the IPL opening game for the 10th successive time!

Only using two overseas players, @DelhiCapitals knock off the @mipaltan Lalit and Patel partnership brilliant. Patel capitalising on the dropped catch by David in the 17th over was the game changer. #DCvMI

Absolute heist this from Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel. MI bottled it with Thampi and Sams just falling apart, but the Delhi lads hung in so well – to go from a required rate of just under 12, to winning with 10 balls to spare is pretty ridiculous

Axar Patel is the hero, what a knock it was, unbeaten 38 runs from just 17 balls including 2 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 223.5 – one of his best knock of his career.
