Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has shared his take on who could become the next captain of Team India. Shastri said the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 could give a good idea regarding who could take the leadership role of the national side.

Notably, Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper, is currently Team India’s captain in all formats. Rohit had replaced superstar Virat Kohli in the role. However, Shastri felt that Rohit is already 34 years old, so the management will look for a younger player to take up the captaincy role in the next few years.

“Rohit’s not getting any younger. Neither is Virat (Kohli). They’ll have to look at who might be the captain two years, three years down the line,” Shastri said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

In fact, Shastri named as many as four options who could become India’s next captain. The Mumbaikar picked Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya as the candidates who could replace Rohit.

Not to mention, all four players are the leaders of their respective IPL franchises. While Rishabh is the captain of Delhi Capitals (DC), Shreyas will be leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming season. Similarly, Rahul and Hardik will be captaining the two new franchises, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT), respectively.

“So that’s where I’ll be looking at. I’ll be looking at Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals). I’ll be looking at Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders). Very closely. Of course KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants), the way he handles that side. And Hardik for the simple reason if that can energise in him a manner that can make him come out and play with gay abandon,” added Shastri.
