Hosts New Zealand finally opened their account in the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 after thrashing Bangladesh in a rain-hit match at the University Oval in Dunedin on Monday.

Due to the rain, the match was reduced to 27 overs per side, where the White Ferns gunned down the 141-run target with nine wickets in hand, thanks to a blistering knock by Suzie Bates. New Zealand had lost captain Sophie Devine early for 14, but the comeback was inspired by the match-winning unbeaten stand of 108 runs for the second wicket between Bates and Amelia Kerr.

While Bates smashed eight boundaries for her 68-ball 79, Amelia gave good support, hitting five boundaries for her 37-ball 47. Both players remained unbeaten to take New Zealand to their first victory in the ongoing multi-team tournament. Notably, New Zealand had lost their opening game against West Indies by just three runs.

Earlier, New Zealand, after opting to bowl first, restricted Bangladesh for 140/8 in 27 overs. Amy Satterthwaite was the pick of the bowler for White Ferns, bagging a three-wicket haul while conceding 25 runs from five overs. For Bangladesh, opener Fargana Hoque top scored with 52 off 63 balls.

“It’s the nature of this tournament (on asked about overcoming the disappointing loss to WI), we have games coming quickly with very less turnaround time. Grateful to the ground staff for getting a game of nearly 50 overs, to Bangladesh for coming up and the umpires for getting the game on. It was easier to manipulate the field against pace place it into pockets in the corners. I was disappointed at not cashing in, it was a brilliant batting strip, as it’s always been in Dunedin. The outfield was a bit slow, but Bates was so good. We know the competition is very tough, happy to pick the win here, and we’ll go on to play against India next, we have played them last month and know what’s coming up,” said Devine after the match.
