Cricket Australia (CA) have appointed former cricketer Andrew McDonald as the new head coach of their men’s cricket team for next four years.

McDonald, 40, will take over the reins from Justin Langer, who resigned from his post in February this year.

After former head coach Justin Langer’s departure in February this year, McDonald was elevated to the position of interim coach while CA searched for a suitable full-time candidate. But following a historic Test and T20I series win on Australia’s first tour of Pakistan since 1998 and a strong endorsement from Test skipper Pat Cummins, McDonald has been handed the full-time role.

“My plan is to build on the growth, depth, and experience of the squad while working collectively with the group and across the game. There are many challenges in the short-term which I know excites the leadership group, the players and the staff,” said McDonald in his official statement post appointment as the head coach.

A look at McDonald’s cricketing career in numbers

  • The all-rounder played four Test matches for Australia, scoring 107 runs with 68 being the highest.
  • He picked nine wickets at an average of 33.33.
  • In first-class cricket, he amassed 4,825 runs and bagged 201 wickets in 95 matches.
  • In List A games, he scored 1,888 runs and claimed 79 scalps across 100 matches.
  • In 93 T20 appearances, McDonald amassed 1,743 runs and pocketed 82 wickets.
