Peter Nevill, who played 17 Tests for Australia in 2015 and 2016, announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket on Friday, April 1.
Nevill was one of the mainstays in New South Wales’ batting line-up since his arrival in 2008/09. He even made a promising start to his Test career, scoring a half-century against England in the 2015 Ashes. However, he couldn’t build momentum over the course of his international career.
As per several Aussie pundits, Nevill paid the price for being too nice (he didn’t sledge enough) and eventually lost his place to Matthew Wade. The right-hander last played a Test match against South Africa at Bellerive Oval in 2016.
Nevill hasn’t been on the field since February this year due to a shoulder injury ending his season early for New South Wales.
Nevill’s official statement
“I always knew that I was close to the end of my career,” Nevill said in his statement to NSW cricket.
“It was a frustrating season for me, I think I’ve missed more games this season due to injury than the rest of my career combined. I’m very proud that I was able to play for Australia, and that I was able to play for such a long time for New South Wales. I’d like to think that I was able to squeeze as much juice out of my orange as I could. For a bloke with minimal talent and no shots, I leave the game pretty content,” he added.
Nevill is only the fourth cricketer to have played over 100 matches for NSW. He is also the most-capped captain in the history of NSW.
