South African star Dewald Brevis was at his level best in Match 23 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Wednesday.
Brevis smashed 49 runs from 25 deliveries, hitting four fours and five humungous sixes, but his effort wasn’t enough to propel MI to their first win of the season as the five-time champions lost their fifth match on the trot.
The 18-year-old sent shockwaves to Punjab’s camp when he smacked Rahul Chahar for four back-to-back sixes on the ninth over of Mumbai’s innings. It all started with a boundary straight down the ground on the second delivery of the over. Brevis then hit four consecutive sixes to collect 29 runs from the over.
Here is how the over went:
- 8.1 – Chahar to Varma – 1 RUN
- 8.2 – Chahar to Brevis – FOUR
- 8.3 – Chahar to Brevis – SIX
- 8.4 – Chahar to Brevis – SIX
- 8.5 – Chahar to Brevis – SIX
- 8.6 – Chahar to Brevis – SIX

PBKS handed MI their fifth consecutive loss in the fifteenth season. After the match, Rohit Sharma was also penalised for a slow over-rate. The Mumbakaikar was fined INR 24 lakhs for committing the offence. Along with Rohit, the rest of the members in the playing eleven were also fined INR 6 lakhs or 25 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lower.
“It’s hardly anything to find out (any negatives), thought we played well, came pretty close to closing the game, a couple of run-outs didn’t help our cause. At one time, we were cruising along but didn’t hold our nerves, credit to PBKS for bowling well in the second half. We’re trying to play with a different thought process, but it’s not working out well,” said Rohit after the match.
