Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni is known as the tactical mastermind and the greatest finisher the game has ever seen. On Thursday night fixture against Mumbai Indians (MI), the veteran wicket-keeper batter exhibited his skills and showed the world why he is still at the top of his game.
In a battle of heavyweights, Dhoni kept his calm, playing a blistering knock of 28 from 13 deliveries, including three boundaries on the final three balls, as CSK chased down the target to hand MI their seventh loss on the trot in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.
Before displaying his vintage avatar with the willow at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, Dhoni also gave a glimpse of his tactical brilliance behind the stumps when he plotted the dismissal of Kieron Pollard.
Pollard, who recently bid farewell to international cricket, arrived in the 14th over of MI’s innings and was looking to take MI to a respectable total. However, Dhoni’s brilliant ploy cut short Pollard’s stay at the crease.
It all happened during the 17th over, bowled by mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana. Dhoni manoeuvred the field and placed Shivam Dube at a straight, long-on. The move clearly worked as the Trinidadian went for a glory shot but ended up giving an easy catch to Dube.

Dhoni’s genius strategy was highly praised by many fans and experts. Former India opener Wasim Jaffer also lauded MSD for continuing the plan he came up first back in the IPL final between CSK and MI in 2010.
“Kids use the same barber for 10+ years. Adults use the same DP for 10+ years. Legends use the same gameplan for 10+ years #MIvCSK #IPL2022,” tweeted Jaffer.

“We were very tense the way game was going. But the great finisher of the game was still there, so we knew we had a chance. He’s still here and doing it for us,” said CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja after the match.
