In the 13th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a thrilling contest at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.
Chasing 170, RCB started decently with openers Faf du Plessis and Anuj Rawat, adding 48 runs in the powerplay without any trouble. But in the very next over, Yuzvendra Chahal, the ex-RCB player, broke the 55-run stand by dismissing Du Plessis (29).
RR didn’t allow to shift the momentum and picked up four more wickets in quick successions to reduce the Challengers to 87/5 in 12.3 overs. It appeared that the RCB had again lost the plot while chasing, but a twist in the tale was waiting to shock the fans.
Experienced campaigner Dinesh Karthik and all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed turned the tables around with quickfire knocks. The pair went on to add 67 runs for the sixth wicket to almost bring down the equation to run-a-ball. Trent Boult broke the partnership by dismissing Shahbaz for a well-made 45 off 26 balls, including 4 fours and three sixes.
Karthik, however, stayed till the end to make sure he took RCB home. He smashed an unbeaten 44 off 23 balls, with the help of eight boundaries, including a maximum.
Earlier, another scintillating batting display by Jos Buttler helped Rajasthan reach a competitive total. RR lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (4) early in the second over, but then Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal partnered to steady the innings.
The duo added a crucial stand of 70 runs for the second wicket before Harshal Patel broke the partnership by removing Padikkal (37) in the 10th over. Soon, the Royals lost captain Sanju Samson (8) to get reduced to 86/3 in 11.4 overs.
But Buttler held his end and kept on tickling the scoreboard. The English batter smashed a brilliant unbeaten 70 run knock off 47 deliveries with the help of 6 sixes. Buttler formed an undefeated partnership of 83 runs for the fourth wicket with Shimron Hetmyer to take RR to 169/3 in 20 overs. Hetmyer chipped in with a valuable 42 not out from 31 deliveries, including 4 fours and a couple of maximums.
Here is how Twitter reacted:
This was a special innings from the uncapped Shahbaz Ahmed. And Dinesh Karthik continues to live up to his finishers role for RCB.
