Mumbai Indians (MI) finally opened their account in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR) by five wickets at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai on Saturday.

Chasing 159, Mumbai lost both openers early for 41 inside the powerplay. Before the Royals could capitalise further, the pair of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma joined hands to steady the ship.

The duo brought back Mumbai into the game by forming a much-needed 81 runs partnership for the second wicket. Surya smashed a brilliant half-century and was looking to cruise through before Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed him for a well-made 51 off 39 balls. In the very next over, Tilak also lost his wicket as MI were reduced to 122/4 in 15.2 overs.

The contest did go down to the final over, but MI eventually managed to win the game to register their maiden victory in the tournament.

Earlier, Jos Buttler yet again shined with the bat, helping Rajasthan post a competitive total. The English batter held one end despite consistent fall of wickets and smashed his third half-century of the fifteenth season.

Buttler scored 67 runs off 52 deliveries with the help of five fours and four sixes. Apart from the right-handed batter, Ravichandran Ashwin smashed a quickfire 9-ball 21, propelling the Royals to post 158/6 on the board in their allotted 20 overs.
