In every era, there have been some cricketers who, despite putting many match-winning performances, stay under the shadow. Keeping that in mind, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer picked his underrated XI of all-time.
While speaking on the show ‘Not Just Cricket’, Jaffer named the special XI, featuring Australian legend Mark Taylor and Indian star Shikhar Dhawan as openers. Jaffer opined that Dhawan is a superior talent who has been overshadowed by the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul.
Jaffer named Taylor as captain of the side, rating him one of the best openers cum leaders in the past. Notably, Taylor had more than a 50% success rate as captain in both formats. When it comes to the middle-order, the Mumbaikar went with Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan, Pakistan legend Younis Khan and West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Jaffer mentioned that Chanderpaul was overshadowed by Brian Lara, while Younis did not get much appreciation due to the presence of Inzamam-ul-Haq. The 44-year-old picked Aussie star Michael Hussey, England all-rounder Paul Collingwood and former Pakistan international Abdul Razzaq to complete his lower middle-order.
Jaffer stated that Hussey was extremely underrated despite scoring massive runs across formats. He further praised Razzaq as one of the best all-rounders in white-ball cricket.
Speaking about the bowling department, Jaffer went with the Sri Lanka duo of Chaminda Vaas and Rangana Herath, who, according to him, were quite undervalued despite producing brilliant records in the longest format. Jaffer concluded by naming Australia fast bowler Ryan Harris to form his XI before adding New Zealand legend Ross Taylor being the 12th member.
