Cricket South Africa (CSA), on Monday, announced the 15-member Women’s squad for their forthcoming tour of Ireland. This is going to be Proteas’ first assignment following their run to the World Cup semifinals earlier this year.
Some senior players will miss the action due to various reasons. While Marizanne Kapp, Lizelle Lee, and Sinalo Jafta are recovering from a respiratory illness, the likes of Masabata Klaas (shoulder injury) and Dane van Niekerk (ankle injury) will miss due to their respective injuries.
One of the eye-catching names in the outfit is batting all-rounder Delmi Tucker, who couldn’t make it to the Proteas World Cup squad. The right-handed batter had a sensational provincial season for the Six Gun Grill Western Province, where she scored 409 runs and picked up as many as 15 wickets in white-ball cricket.
“I am very excited with the squad selected for the Ireland series. Having some young and fringe players in the group gives us an opportunity to rotate and test their growth. Some of these players just missed out of the recently held World Cup, and it is a great opportunity for them to stake a claim for positions,” said Convenor of Selectors Clinton du Preez in an official statement.
“The selection approach has been very clear and is set out to balance both the preparations towards the T20 Commonwealth Games and the T20 World Cup. With the latter a few months away, coupled with the ODI games that commence the ICC Women’s Championships (IWC) ranking points, a blend of players who can excel and add value to both formats were selected to allow for rotation,” he added.
