In a thrilling contest, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) managed to defeat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by two runs at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai to qualify for the playoffs in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Chasing the massive target of 211, the Knight Riders took the game to the wire with 21 required off the final over. Rinku Singh almost sealed the deal for the two-time champions with a blistering 15-ball 40 run knock, but a screamer by Evin Lewis on the fifth ball of the final over bowled by Marcus Stoinis ended Rinku’s innings as LSG managed to beat the Knight Riders by two runs only.

Earlier, Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul destroyed the KKR bowling attack and recorded the highest partnership for the opening wicket in the history of the cash-rich league. It was also the first occasion that openers remained undefeated after a team batted first and completed 20 overs.

De Kock hit an unbeaten 140 off 70 balls while Rahul smashed 68 not out to help Lucknow post a massive 210 runs on the board in 20 overs. Previously, the record for the highest opening partnership in IPL was held by Jonny Bairstow and David Warner, who had stitched 185 for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2019.

Highest partnerships for any wicket in IPL:

  • 229 – Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers, RCB v GL, Bengaluru 2016
  • 215* – Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers, RCB v MI, Mumbai 2015
  • 210* – KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock, LSG v KKR, Mumbai 2022
