During the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR), Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh were the architects of a clinical win for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who had lost their five previous fixtures in IPL 2022. The two men added an unbroken 66-run partnership for the fourth wicket in just 6.2 overs. While Rana remained unbeaten on 48, Rinku was adjudged ‘Man of the Match’ for his 23-ball 42 not out.

Opting to bowl first, KKR got an immediate boost when Umesh Yadav dismissed Devdutt Padikkal in the third over of the innings. Jos Buttler, the leading run-scorer in IPL 2022, could not find any kind of rhythm and departed after a slow 22.

RR captain Sanju Samson (54) then led from the front, scoring a half-century against the disciplined KKR bowling attack while Shimron Hetmyer (27 not out off 13) played a cameo to take their side to 152-5.

Brief scores: Rajasthan Royals 152-5 in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 54, Shimron Hetmyer 27; Tim Southee 2/46) lost to Kolkata Knight Riders 158-3 in 19.1 overs (Shreyas Iyer 34, Nitish Rana 48*, Rinku Singh 42*) by 7 wickets.
