After etching his name in the record books through the batting blitz, India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah shined with the ball to stamp his authority on Day 2 of the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Bumrah led the pace attack from the front, drawing the first blood in the third over when he cleaned up opener Alex Lees for 6. Bumrah didn’t just stop there as he removed another opener, Zak Crawley, in the fifth over for 9.

Before the hosts could make any further move, Bumrah yet again ruined their plans as the right-arm pacer removed Ollie Pope to reduce England to 44/3 in 11 overs. Former skipper Joe Root and middle-order batter Jonny Bairstow tried stabilising the innings as the duo calmed things down with their partnership.

The pair of Root and Bairstow added 34 runs for the fourth wicket and were looking set to cruise through before Mohammed Siraj proved his mettle. Siraj got rid of the dangerous Root (31) to send shockwaves to the English camp.

As if this wasn’t enough, Mohammad Shami also joined the party as he dismissed night-watchman Jack Leach (0) to reduce England to 83/5 as India took full control of the match. The hosts added just a solitary run before the umpires announced stumps with Bairstow (12 no) and captain Ben Stokes (0 no) at the crease.

Earlier, India finished their first innings at 416 thanks to Ravindra Jadeja and Bumrah’s batting exhibition. While Jajeja went on to smash his maiden Test century (104), Bumrah played an unbeaten 31-run knock.
