Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja shined with the bat to rescue India after early trouble on the opening day of the highly-anticipated rescheduled fifth Test against England. The duo started the partnership when the visitors were in a spot of bother losing their five wickets for just 98 runs after lunch.

The pair of Pant and Jadeja then formed a scintillating stand to lead India’s recovery. It appeared that Pant was batting on a completely different track as the left-handed batter smacked English bowlers all around the park. Pant got to his fifth century in the longest format off just 89 deliveries, exhibiting an under pressure, top-class inning.

Fastest Test 100s for India outside Asia:

  • 78 balls – Virender Sehwag v West Indies Gros Islet 2006
  • 88 balls – Mohammad Azharuddin v England Lord’s 1990
  • 89 balls – Rishabh Pant v England Edgbaston 2022*

Jadeja also played a handy role as Pant’s supporter, not giving English bowlers any chance to capitalise after such a good start. Jadeja smashed his 18th half-century in Test cricket as the duo crossed the 200-run partnership, putting India on top.

Though England did get some relief as they got the prized wicket of Pant, thereby putting brakes to a dominant 222-run stand, courtesy of part-timer Joe Root. Pant was dismissed by the former English skipper for a well-made 146 off 111 deliveries, with the help of 24 boundaries, including four sixes. At stumps, the tourists reached 338/7 with Jadeja (83 not out) and Mohammad Shami at the crease.
